Dr Pepper Cupcake Recipe & The Sunday Funday Party
Yes, I’m totes going to give you the Dr Pepper Cupcake recipe. But, can you let me brag about how Uh.Maze.Ing my little ones are for just a second? Remember when I told you last week our AC went out? Well good news ya’ll, it’s back up and cranking out the cold. No one is more relieved than I am. It’s beyond hot here in Las Vegas. Beyond! And, I of course got a tad more than whiny being all sweaty. Big ole baby status if I’m being honest. What? I. Was. Sweaty…. But you know who were super troopers and barely made a peep about the whole sitch? The kids! I know right! They took our sweat box like champs and I was a straight-up grumpy puss. They deserved a little reward. We have a splash pad right behind our house and love going there to play. So, for being so full of the awesome sauce, I packed up a picnic lunch and we had ourselves a ‘Kids Behaved Better Than Me’ backyard bash. Look….
Bracston and Jaymie are only here visiting for the Summer. So, they don’t get to hang out at the splash pad like Ethan all year which made it even extra cool for them. They had a blast climbing, swinging and horsing around in the water. I probably took a kazillion pictures for my scrapbook too. Look at those happy little faces! It was really so much fun. Hanging out and having fun in the sun with these guys made all right with the world. Jaymie is 4 now and seriously thinks she’s a princess. Bracston is 5 and still a tough as nails all out boy. Seems like it was just yesterday that I was telling you all how he was born almost 2 months early. Enjoy all these little moments you guys. Time flies way too fast! Ok, now it’s your turn! Make some sammies, grab the shorties at your house and get out and enjoy the Summer! Have your own backyard bash. And, pack a Dr Pepper Cupcake or 10 for a special treat too! Here’s how you make them…
Dr Pepper Cupcake Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 Box Devil’s Food Cake Mix
- 3 TBS Dry Buttermilk Powder (or 3/4 Cup Buttermilk)
- 1/2 Cup Oil
- 1 1/2 Cups Dr Pepper
- 3 Eggs
- 1 TSP Vanilla
DIRECTIONS:
To start let’s pre-heat the oven to *350. Fill your pan with cupcake liners. This Dr Pepper Cupcake recipe will make 24 awesome cupcakes. Also, you can find the Buttermilk powder I used here, rather than liquid. I find I’m throwing unused liquid away a lot and the powder not only lasts, it’s less than $10. Cheap, easy, no waste! Winning! Ok, now in your mixing bowl combine cake mix, buttermilk, Dr Pepper and vegetable oil on low (we don’t want any bubbling up and over with that Dr Pepper!) Add your eggs 1 at a time until well incorporated. Fill your cups evenly with batter and bake for 18-20 minutes. Since ovens vary, check with a toothpick to be sure they are done. Remove from oven and let cool. We can’t frost hot cupcakes, right?
Dr Pepper Cupcake Frosting
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 Cup Butter (room temp)
- 3-4 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 1/8 Cup Shortening
- 5-6 TBS Dr Pepper
- Maraschino Cherry (to plop on top)
- Chocolate Shavings (optional, garnish)
DIRECTIONS:
Cream butter and shortening together in mixing bowl until it’s super smooth. Slowly add 1/2 powdered sugar and Dr Pepper. Mix until smooth. Add remaining powdered sugar until you reach the consistency you’re going for to frost. More for stiff frosting, less for looser. Frost your Dr Pepper Cupcake really cute and ENJOY!
You can find all the ingredients for the Dr Pepper Cupcake recipe and all kinds of goodies to throw your own Backyard Bash at your local Walmart. They have everything, don’t they? Next time, I might try the Cherry Dr Pepper with this recipe. Sounds kind of yummy!

I had one of those days today. We had to be out of the house most of the day and it was so hot and humid and I was just over it and not in a good mood most of the day. But my kids were really good and behaved so well all day. I love these soda cupcake recipes. Thanks for sharing!

Looks so cute! I’m wondering if some lower calorie version of Dr. Pepper is possible? I don’t think you can cook with aspartame but what do you think of some of the other options?

Buttermilk powder…brilliant! I’ve not seen it before but will have to look for it. I’m in the same boat, I always have it going to waste and usually just use the milk & lemon juice trick.

These looked amazing!! so I totally made a batch. Unfortunately I have to admit, they didn’t taste much like Dr. Pepper =( It was more of a “slightly different taste” chocolate cupcake. Did I do something wrong? Don’t get me wrong people still loved them, just not for the Dr Pepperiness…
Kim @ The Baking ChocolaTess says
They look amazing, thanks for sharing, Pinning and visiting fro Create and Sahre DIY and Recipe Party!
Tylene says
I made these for a friends birthday party who loves Dr. pepper cupcakes. The cupcake turned out great. The frosting did not work out. It was super thick and regreted using shortening, but maybe I did it wrong. Next time I think I’ll think I’ll try a different frosting, but man yours look fantastic!
Sassy says
I’m going to guess maybe it was the use of shortening. It can produce a different consistency and texture with your finished product sometimes. Especially if you use margarine rather than real butter. Next time, skip the shortening and use all butter.
Let me know if that helps!
