The Cupcake Project: Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes
Hey there! I know you’ve sat there… waiting, waiting, waiting. Dude! Where’s The Cupcake Project? Well, it’s Summer vaca, and things have gone just a wee bit off the rails. Schedules? We don’t need no stinkin’ schedules! Or so I thought! Cuz, if you could see all the emails I’ve gotten asking for more cupcakes, you’d know. I’m sorry! Really, I am. But… kids, Summer, family… Oy. But, next week school starts and I’m more than ready for that to happen! I did manage to whip up not 1 but 2 new homemade cupcake recipes this week! YAY!! Today I’m throwing down some fan-freaking-tastic Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes! That book, Your Cup of Cake, by Lizzy Early who makes seriously awesome homemade cupcakes has made Ethan so happy. Ok, me too but we don’t need to discuss my waistline here in public. Have you been keeping up with all my homemade cupcakes recipes? I’ll post links to all of them at the bottom for the new peeps, but I know my amazeballs loyal readers will enjoy this sweet citrus-y and ooey, gooey Orange White Chocolate Cupcake Recipe! Ready to get your easy-bake on with me? Let’s do this!
Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes
Ingredients
- 1 Box White Cake Mix (I used Pillsbury)
- 2 Eggs
- 2 Egg Whites
- 1/3 Cup Oil
- ¾ Cup Buttermilk
- ¾ Cup Sour Cream
- 1 TSP Vanilla
- ½ Cup White Chocolate Chips
- 4 TBSP Heavy Cream
- 8 oz Ceam Cheese (softened)
- ½ Cup Butter (softened)
- Zest of 1 ½ Oranges
- 3-4 Cups Powdered Sugar
Instructions
First, we need to preheat oven to *350 degrees or nothing is going to happen, let alone awesome Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes! Let's do that 1st. Then go ahead and line pans with cupcake liners. (I use the Wilton ColorCups, totes cute and they hold their color when baking!) This will make 24 homemade cupcakes.
In small bowl, sift cake mix and set aside.
n a large mixing bowl, combine your eggs, egg whites and oil. Add in buttermilk, sour cream mix well. Now, slowly mix in cake mix and vanilla. Mix, mix mix until there's no lumps! No one likes lumpy cupcakes!
Using a food scoop, fill cupcake liners ¾ full and bake for about 16-20 minutes. All ovens will vary. Use that 'knife comes out clean' trick to make sure they are done.
Set aside and while they start to cool, let's make White Chocolate Ganache.
Use a microwave or double boiler (I pop them in the microwave) to melt white chocolate chips and in medium saucepan, heat and mix with heavy cream. Stir until smooth and creamy.* Be careful not to burn the white chocolate chip, this is gross*
When cupcakes are nearly cooled, dip the tops in the ganache. Set them aside to harden. Pretty, right? Now let's whip up that Orange Cream Cheese Frosting!
In large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, butter and zest until light and fluffy, Zest your oranges right over and into the bowl. Why make more dishes. It takes a few depending on size, guestimate rather than measure! You'll do fine! Slowly add powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency. If frosting is too think, add a tablespoon of orange juice. Or, add one anyways, because it's super yummy!
Now frost those Orange White Chocolate Cupcakes and Enjoy!

See, easy and yummy! Worth the wait for Orange White Chocolate, huh?? All I’m saying on the matter of all that ‘zesting’… Orange Cream Cheese Frosting made with real orange zest and real ingredients does not compare to anything made with artificial flavoring and chemically dyed orange color. The end.
