Spicy Blackberry BBQ Steak Recipe Summer Grilling Kicked Up A Notch
If you’re a regular reader of either of my blogs, you know I’m off on a summer grilling kick. It’s hot here in Vegas. Too hot for the oven. So, I’ve been coming up with new and unique grilling recipes to keep things delicious but also stay on the healthy eating and living theme as well. I started with those Uh.Maze.Ing Apple Bourbon BBQ Ribs and even threw in some Grilled Tandoori Chicken. Summer grilling doesn’t only mean chicken legs, right? I had to take a trip to my local Smart and Final to pick up some of their Cattleman’s Beef to keep the summer grilling going. You can check out my whole shopping trip here and see what-else I scored! I debated back and forth between a Brisket and these beautiful NY Strip steaks. Since I’d really like my brisket done up in a smoker, and I don’t have a smoker… yet; I picked up these babies and whipped up this Spicy Blackberry BBQ Steak Recipe. The spicy rub and blackberry BBQ sauce gives these steaks just enough kick to taste some heat but not so much of a burn at all. It’s a perfect combo. Next time, I’m totally grabbing some beef ribs or that brisket and buying myself a smoker! Until then, fire up your burners and let’s get our summer grilling on!
Spicy Blackberry BBQ Steak Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 TBSP Olive Oil
- 2 TBSP Thyme
- 2 TBSP Rosemary
- 1 TSP Garlic Powder
- 1 TSP Kosher Salt
- 1 TSP Ground Pepper
- 1 TSP Cayenne Pepper
- 2 Cups Fresh Blackberries (NOT Frozen!)
- ½ Onion (chopped)
- 3 TBSP Brown Sugar
- ¾ Cup Balsamic Vinegar
- 3 TBSP Ketchup
- 2 Cloves Garlic (minced)
- 1 TSP Cayenne Pepper
- ½ TSP Ground Cinnamon
- ½ TSP Ground Ginger
- 2 TSP Lemon Juice
- 3 TBSP Olive Oil
- 1 pinch Salt
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine all Rub Ingredients with a whisk. Make sure they are good and mixed. Rub spices into your steak. You want to VERY liberally coat those babies!
Put rubbed steak in a sealed container and pop in refrigerator for 4 hours (overnight is best!)
About 1/2 hour before you're ready to start the grill, pull your steaks out and set aside. Now, we're going to whip up the Spicy Blackberry BBQ Sauce! (fun, fun, fun!)
In a medium sauce pan heat up the Olive Oil on medium temp. Add in Garlic and Onion to saute for about 5 minutes (just enough too wilt not caramelize) Add all remaining Ingredients EXCEPT Blackberries. Let that get a good simmer going. Now, add your Blackberries a handful at a time. Cook on low stirring constantly until sauce thickens. (about 10 minutes) Remove from heat. Pour Blackberry sauce in food processor (or blender, that works too) Pureeing until smooth. Now set that aside while we fire up the grill!
Let the grill heat up and then turn off burners on 1 side. For charcoal grills, move heated coals to 1 side. (we use gas) Coat grill with a bit of Olive Oil so your steaks don't stick. Rub can do that and then they burn (yuck) Cook steaks over direct heat just until they get some nice char marks on each side then place on indirect heat side of grill to continue cooking through.
Just before your steaks are cooked to your liking (I like mine med/well) it's time for our Uh.Maze.Ing Spicy Blackberry Sauce to go on. Coat 1 side and allow to caramelize (this goes quick, don't walk away now!) Repeat with the other side. You've now made yet another sweet summer grilling dinner!

We made an easy spinach salad with fresh spinach, mushrooms, sliced onions and some fine chopped bacon. It was seriously delicious too! If you’re having a summer grilling party and there’s small fry’s about (or big fry’s who love fun desserts) I think these Strawberry Pink Lemonade Cupcakes we made last week will be the perfect ending to a great meal!

Cool! I don’t have steak but I have way too much moose that our family is eating our way through. (so sick of moose) We also have lots of berries here in Alaska. (The main diet of moose). So I think I will adapt this with our berries and our moose. Thanks for the idea!

I have most of the stuff to make this one, too! I’d better add it to the list of ‘amazing things I’ll make in the indefinite future but will drool over until I get off my lazy ass’.
It’s a pretty long list. And you’re on it multiple times.

I recently overheard a conversation in which two people were talking about how to cook ribs. To be more to the point they were discussing how to BBQ pork ribs. This is a subject I’m always interested in as I know from experience that many people find ribs difficult to cook on the grill. Most people can cook ribs but they struggle getting them to turn out like they get them in a restaurant.
