Saving Money On Unlimited Wireless Plans 1 Month Follow Up
So, remember when I told you that I was out to see if I could save some cash on unlimited wireless plans? I was hoping to take at least a bit of stress of my husband’s shoulders when it comes to sticker shock AKA that huge cell phone bill every month. He’s a hard working firefighter / paramedic and I kinda think that’s enough stress, right? It was pretty fun going all 007 undercover with Ethan. Shopping for a great Father’s Day gift and coming up with this. Well, I’m back with an update. It’s been a month since I’ve been using Walmart Family Mobile. I’ve got some pros, a few cons and my verdict… Is it possible to save on unlimited wireless plans.
Walmart Family Mobile – The Pros On Unlimited Wireless Plans
First question. Does Walmart Family Mobile really save you money on unlimited wireless plans? The short answer is yes! In my 1st post, I showed you my statement and what we currently pay each month for our unlimited wireless plans. $161 and some change for 2 lines, unlimited text, 450 shared talk minutes, and a set amount of data. Oh Mylanta, when we go over that! Don’t ask, it’s obscene. With my job alone I hit it. So Walmart Family Mobile wins that round right out of the gate. Unlimited talk, text and data is only $40 for the 1st line, $35 for each additional one you add. So, for us, that’s $75. Less than 1/2! The other bonus they nailed it on is the fact that you’re not locked into a 2 year contract. Which we’re chained to with our current carrier. Think about how much changes in 1 year, let alone 2. I can’t even make a weekly menu-plan. Talk about freedom! You can cancel with no fees at anytime! {insert Mel Gibson going all Braveheart image here!} Walmart Family Mobile also wins the unlimited wireless plans competition for easiest set-up ever.
That’s my buddy Trop. He had me up and running in about 10 minutes. And, that includes explaining all the in’s and out’s to me. Ya know when you go into one of the other carriers and after spending 20 minutes Ohhhh-ing and Ahhh-ing over the cool gadgets, you have to sit down for 1/2 hour or so to hook up? Totally doesn’t happen here. Easy, peasy, and super quick. Which I appreciated considering I had Ethan with me doing a ‘I want this, I need that’ jig. After Trop helped me in the store get my phone all set up, I took some time at home to create my Online account so I can manage everything right online. You can see your usage, data speed, pay your bill. The whole works. And, there’s always a customer support person available if you have questions. You’re not left hanging on the phone with an endless loop of pre-recorded messages. Nice, I know. The 1 mistake I made was thinking a mid-level smartphone would suit my husband’s needs. Having unlimited wireless plans at a low rates is awesome. But, you need to be able to see the screen. Also, he oftentimes has to take photos of accident scenes. The photo quality of the phone I got was not very good. I opted to bump him up to the Samsung Galaxy 4 (watch for my review of that later this week!) I’m really happy to say that he had great service out in the middle of nowhere on the winding back roads he often gets called to as well. I was actually a bit surprised by that to be honest! When you have to patch into the ER for updating on emergency situations, that’s pretty important!
Walmart Family Mobile – The Cons On Unlimited Wireless Plans
When you 1st sign-up and at the beginning of every new billing cycle, you get 1GB boost of data speed. But, once you use that up, you drop down to a slower speed. In general, this might not be a huge deal for most folks and be perfect for your family. With my job and his need to access important medical info as quick as possible, it was a bit of a bummer for us. It’s certainly not crawling through sand kind of slow at all, but we noticed a difference. The remedy? You can buy Boost packages. I think they are fairly priced too with $10 or $25 options. Which, still makes our bill less than we pay now and with unlimited wireless plans, there’s none of those obscene overage charges. So, I can’t call this a ‘fail’, but something you should be aware of. Since you can log into your online account and buy that boost, it’s really not a hassle, either. Your texting and talking are never affected. No worries there. The one pitfall was service in the casinos. Now, most people don’t live in Las Vegas and hit up the cool hot spots. And honestly, we’re not huge gamblers sitting at blackjack tables. But, I do go to quite a few local events every month and some of those are in the casinos. Service was spotty sometimes. Our current carrier wins that round. I don’t seem to have that problem with them. My son, who is on a different carrier than I am, does have the same spotty service problem. So, while it’s obviously not a Walmart Family Mobile specific issue, it happens. The remedy? I went away from the action and closer to an outside door to update Twitter or Facebook, social media kind of stuff that’s required when I had to. I’m going to go through the Summer with all the events I have to attend and see if it becomes a huge problem or if a quick hop to an outside door works.
Walmart Family Mobile – The Verdict On Unlimited Wireless Plans
Over all, we’re happy with Walmart Family Mobile. Compared to other unlimited wireless plans, you can’t beat the price. For sure! It’s super easy to set-up. You can access your account online easily anytime and customer service was great. You are not chained to lengthy contracts and can use any range of phones with it. From simple all the way to super duper smartphone, all available models are compatible. For those reasons, we’re giving it 2 thumbs up. Just keep in mind the data slow down if you’re a heavy user and you should be good to snap pics to Instagram and watch all the funny cat videos your little heart desires perfectly. Or, you can always keep up with the shenanigans going on over here at Sassy Girlz, too! I’ll be watching for you!

We pay an obscene amount for our coverage too and our service can be spotty at times. This does seem like a good option, although I am sure we would go over our speed limit pretty fast.

This weekend I’ve got to head to Walmart and check out the options for phones.
I’m addicted to my iPhone 4s so I’m concerned about what I’ll have to switch to. And I text all day + use my phone to check e-mail, so I’d definitely need a boost each month for data.
Nikki says
Sounds like a good plan! I am considering it when I switch phones. Right now, I’m sharing a plan with my brother, which is more economical. Eventually, though, I’ll need to get a new plan of my own.

I am actually loving my Walmart family plan service too! I also noticed the change in boost speed once I used up that 1 GB. I was surprised how fast I used that up each month. But even with the slower speed, it still went light-years faster than my old contract phone. I really do like the service plan.

I love Wal-Mart. They have everything!
Danielle says
When our kids are old enough to get on our plan we’ll be looking into this. Waay cheaper than what we’re spending.

Sounds like a good plan, thanks for sharing!

My sister goes thru Walmart and she likes it, she has been doing it for awhile now and she always says how it saves her lots of money!!
Debi@ The Spring Mount 6 Pack says
Our bill has been insane and I wanted to slowly get everyone off the contracts. This seems perfect. I figured it out we would actually pay less upgrading everyone to these plans and then the older kids could have smart phones.
Kristina says
Wow sounds great! Does it work with an iPhone too?
Terri says
This does sound like a winning plan! Although, between four of us on smart phones, we do plow through a lot of data, even with boosting our data speed limit, we’d still come out miles ahead of where we are now. Oh, all the wonderful things we could do with the savings! Thanks so much for sharing about your experience – with a big decision like this, that affects the whole family, I’m so much more comfortable hearing of another’s first hand account 🙂

The Nokia Lumia is a really awesome phone, but don’t take my word for it. Amazon has the best reviews from people who actually bought the phone. Here’s a list of the best reviews and discounts for the Nokia Lumia and it’s accessories: http://amzn.to/18vTebm. Done all the research for you. Hope this helps.
